firstly, you’ve just released a thumping new song, tamagotchi, with saint, which i absolutely can’t get enough of. how did that all come about and what was it like to work with saint?
Sooo about my new track… Saint, a bomb producer from LA, linked me thru our rap homie Chapman, and got the beat sent over to me. And as you can hear, the beat was INSANEEE! So I hopped on that thing right away! Sent my vocals over to LA & Tamagotchi was born. It took me FOREVER to come up with a name for it. Originally I wanted to name it "Shoes, Booze & Boobz" but it jus wasn't sitting right with me. So finally I just pinpointed TAMAGOTCHI after we shot the video with CLASSNYC because that's when it made perfect sense to me! I thought it was soooo catchy, and it is! "IT'S A SHAME, I WILL TRAIN YOU. LIKE A TAMAGOTCHI"!
in ya mouf! blasted onto the scene and is certainly being spun on a lot of turntables. what was it like making it and what are the highlights?
IN YA MOUF has only been out for about 5 months now, and it is making more waves than I could have ever asked for! I focused on making tracks that I KNOW would be able to bump in clubs. I took trips out to Baltimore to work with producer Mighty Mark who's a top producer in Baltimore Club music. I incorporated the club beats with my usual raunchy catchy flows & it turned to magic! I like to make mixtapes you can throw on without having to skip tracks. My Mixtapes are great played in any fashion: Getting ready for work, riding out to the club, kicking it ya homies, ANYTHING. Just throw the Burger on and you're guaranteed to be jamming' lol. The highlight to me is the feedback. It makes me sooo happy to know you guys are actually listening to and LIKING what I'm doing! I'm just a girl from Queens making music & putting out videos!
soufflé is the super hot video in which you appear with your sister girl, junglepussy. so tell me, what is junglepussy really like?
Yessss I love my sister girl JP! She is just so funny & real and thats why we get along sooo well, cuz we always keep it real with each & that's how real friends are supposed to hold it down for each other. And we both love rapping, cracking jokes, lounging and making nutritious snacks & smoothies. We really just be lovin' life!
and what are you listening to at the mo dai? who are you spinning?
Ahhhh I always get asked this question but the answer remains the same! I am suchhhh a 90's girrllll and Im totally stuck in the past! I absolutely cannot stop listening to TLC, SWV, 702, Monica, Mya & Toni Braxton! Thats when im not bumping girl rap, Khia, Trina, Kim, Foxy, you know, the greats, at least to me they are. I'm just all about Girl Power and back in the day, female artists embraced each other, so I like to listen in & exude this as well. There's absolutely no new music in my ipod! lol & smh.
you’ve been working at patricia field clothing store, hosting your own shows at fashion week parties. how’s that been?
It's awesome really. Growing up, I learned early I loved & was into fashion/arts, as well as dancing & entertaining. So working in Patricia Field allows me to explore both fields whole heartedly. The store is so supportive of me, which kinda allows me to be an advocate for the store. I love that fans can come by and shop with me & hangout with me. It's great, it's like, if you're looking for me, you know where to find me!
you’re a bit of a fashionista yourself dai, and we hear that you’re starting up your own online boutique, mommy’z closet. how’s that going and what does it involve?
YES! Its pretty simple since its my first venture in this, but it will include what I like to call Mid-thrifts! Vintage to semi-new pieces at dope cheapy prices. I'm just the best at getting my hands on the dopest vintage finds, so I figured why not share this with the WORLD! Mommy'z Closet will also feature actual Pop-Up shops thrown by me & ya girl JP! So this is just a way of not being stingy with the Fashion & letting everyone get in on the fun!
i have to ask about your name, dai burger. just where does it come from?
Well Dai, pronounced DAY is jus short for my real name which is Dainene. Andddd I took on Burger cuz I'd like to think I'm stacked, juicy, bout my lettuce & my cheese, got buns, got whatever you need! And who doesn't like BURGERS? Even vegetarians love a veggie burg!
so dai, when you’re not rapping, singing and dancing. just what do you like to get up to on a night out in new york?
Well, I get booked to host parties pretty often so that's in usual rotation. Which of course is fun & awesome. However, when i'm not booked, please believe I'm in my crib (I call it Burger Salon) kicked back, watching NetFlix, eating ice-cream, gabbing on the phone, soaking my feet in my lil foot spa. Im a total homebody when I'm not out on the scene. Just busy being a regular girly girl!
and let me ask you how has twenty fourteen been for you so far? what have you been up to and what does the rest of the year hold?
OMG so I hear 2014 is Year of the Aquarius, and I am your quintessential Aquarian! I really must admit, 2014 is proving to really be MY YEAR. I'm being booked to perform & host left & right and things are really looking up for ya girl! I'm hitting so many career turning points & I'm just ready to blast off and take my music international and fly as high as I can.
Being written up as Rolling Stone's most recent Artist to watch has been my biggest feat to date. So I'm just ready for the opportunities that come along with this. Wish me luck ya'llllll <3!
lastly, you appeared in beyonce’s video party. what was that like and more to the point what was beyonce like?
Ohhh that was a fun time! I was invited to the video the DAY before the shoot by her stylist who knew me through the store. And I'd never decline such an honor. Beyonce was def the sweetie you'd expect! Didn't get to hang with her like you'd expect as she was getting ready between scenes, turning those bomb ass looks! But I def had a great time on set, as there were other downtown locals in the video as well who I already knew. And Solange & Theophilus London were there coolin' around so that was fun.
